Maple Chocolate Truffles Featured on
“Taste of the Valley”
This summer TVCOGECO producer Jeremy Charbonneau created 4
episodes of “Taste of the Valley”; a food & travel program
based throughout the Ottawa Valley.
Community produced
by host Bruce McIntyre, the program visited unique food locales and its
host created and sampled interesting food and dishes that are specific
to our neck of the woods. Some of the food and locations that
were highlighted this season were very unique. Including
Maple Chocolate Truffles at Fulton’s Pancake House made by Lynn
Mayer-Jones.
Look
for “Taste of the Valley” to air on TVCOGECO coming in the
fall. And don’t forget to check out Taste of the Valley
on their brand new website at TV
Cogeco (will not be active until
mid-September).

Production by Japanese Company at
Fulton’s
The
weekend of September 11 to 14, 2009 was an exciting and busy one at
Fulton’s with a Japanese film crew arriving to film a language
educational video. It is for 1st grade children titled “Meet the
World”.
The
publishers’ aim is that Japanese children learn English and Canadian
culture. The Canadian location for this production was at Fulton’s
Pancake House & Sugar Bush and Gatineau Park. Parker Deugo 6th
generation of the Fulton Family was the Canadian boy chosen to be
featured in this educational film. Through his daily life (with help
from his brother Tyson and Cousins Julia and Madeline and adult family
members) the Japanese children will learn English and Canadian
Culture.
This was
an honour for our family to be chosen and it was a great pleasure to
work with the fabulous crew. Watch for the unveiling of the finished
product in early 2010. The Fulton-Deugo clan would like to thank
everyone involved. Publisher: Benesse Corporation, Japan, Production
Company: Taiyo Kikaku Co., Ltd, Japan, Contact in Canada: Wonderland
Tours Inc., Vancouver, BC, Neil Fennell (who played the Park Ranger),
Mike Bull (Ottawa Tourism) and our great staff and friends who helped
out.

2009 ONTARIO MAPLE SYRUP AWARD THE DEUGO
FAMILY
The
Deugo Family have been carrying on the maple tradition of the Fulton's
since 1980. This family operation, now in the 6`" generation, is
continuing to produce maple syrup on this site started over 150 years
ago.
Shirley's parents, Len and Hazel Fulton started modernizing
their operation in the early 1960's by installing the
first
plastic tubing in the area and by building a Pancake House in
1969.
In
1980, George moved his plumbing business and Shirley left her nursing
career and moved to the farm to help her father and mother with the
maple
operation.
Over
the years, George was able to make many innovations to improve the
equipment. Shirley has always had the ideas to further promote maple
and the energy and perseverance to carry them out. The facility has
grown from a small personal production sugar camp to a 4 Season
International Canadian destination. It now is home to national and
international group tours, teambuilding/training and personal
development camps, corporate retreats and conference center, banquet
facilities and special occasions as well as the traditional spring
maple syrup
season.
Over
the years, Shirley has served as a director and president of Lanark and
District Maple Syrup Producers Association and as a director of the
Ontario Maple Syrup Producers
Association.
The
Deugo's greatest accomplishment has been the promotion of maple to the
thousands of people coming to the pancake house and sugar bush. For
several years they have hosted charity events that have raised money
for Children's Hospital of Eastern Ontario (CHEO); the Almonte
Hospital; Firemen and many other worthy
causes.
Since
George lost his courageous battle with diabetes in October 2007,
Shirley along with the support of her family continue to honour his
memory and keep contributing to the maple industry in Ontario. Their
family consists of daughter Lorraine, her husband Scott Downey and
their daughters Julia and Madeline, Cedar Hill; son Scott and his wife
Brenda and their sons Parker, Tyson and Logan, Cedar Hill; and daughter
Pamela and her husband Grant Martin and their sons Todd, Neil, Adam and
Graham of
Listowell.
Tom Affleck & The School
Box Program in
Nicaragua
On
a bright Sunday morning in February, the congregations of The Pakenham
Pastoral Charge, Zion United Church, and St. Andrew’s United Church,
joined together for worship at Fulton’s Pancake House. Both of these
congregations celebrate and give thanks for the wonders of God’s
creation, and so what a wonderful place to worship on a little piece of
heaven right here in Cedar Hill. Surrounded by the towering maples,
warmed by the touch of the sun, sharing laughter with friends the
congregations experienced the embrace of God’s Spirit.
The
Pancake house filled with delighted voices of children: a grand
cathedral could not have sounded sweeter, as many voices joined singing
songs of praise and thanksgiving, accompanied by fine musicians on the
keyboard and oboe.
A
highlight of our worship time together was having Tom Affleck share his
stories of his work in Central America. Tom spent time as a youth in
Cedar Hill; we are all proud of his accomplishments. He now heads up
The School Box Program in Central America. This organization is
committed to supporting the right of every child to a basic education.
Tom spoke of his encounters with children in Nicaragua, he spoke of
work being done to build much needed schools, he also spoke of the
training that is given to the people of Central America so that they
will be able to reshape their future. Tom offered a message of hope to
those of us concerned about our brothers and sisters who live in other
parts of our shared world. Because of the work that Tom does, and
because of the work of so many committed people, there is cause to be
hopeful even within these challenging times.
The
Fulton-Deugo Family provided lunch for the congregation (delicious
pancakes of course!) $1200.00 was donated to assist School Box. The
generosity of these congregations surpassed all expectations. A
gathering of worship at the local Pancake House in Cedar Hill made a
remarkable difference to some children in faraway Nicaragua. It was a
good reminder to never underestimate the
possibilities!
Following
our time of worship, folks had a wonderful time on the wagon ride, and
youngsters played in the familiar playground. All and all it was a
grace filled day that overflowed with blessings of every kind.
We
extend our gratitude to Shirley, Scott, and Brenda for sharing their
special part of the world with us. We extend our gratitude to Tom for
the work he does in living out the Gospel message.
Please
know that all will find welcome at Zion United Church in Cedar Hill on
Sunday mornings at 9:30, and at St. Andrew’s United in Pakenham on
Sunday mornings at 11:00.
Peace and Blessings to
you all.
