A Sweet Family Legacy, Rooted in Nature and Connection

Our Story Timeline

1840

The Beginning

One of the three Fulton brothers came from Scotland and settled on 400 acres in Cedar Hill, where they learned maple syrup making from First Nations and early settlers, a tradition that continues today.

1940

Leonard & Hazel Fulton (3rd Generation)

Leonard Fulton and his wife, Hazel, inherited the farm, raising dairy cattle and beef while producing maple syrup with Leonard’s brother Johnny.

1942

Sharing Maple Beyond the Family

At first, maple syrup and sugar were for family use only. But soon, Fulton’s maple syrup began making its way to Ottawa’s ByWard Market, where its reputation spread.

1969

The First Pancake House

Leonard built the first pancake house, offering homemade doughnuts, lemonade, and pancakes to visitors. Guests also enjoyed maple sugar candies, maple butter, brittle, and taffy on snow.

1980

A Family Tragedy

Ross, Leonard and Hazel’s son, stepped in to help with the farm. Tragically, in 1980, he passed away in a drowning accident at just 19 years old.

1983

Passing the Torch

After Ross's passing, Shirley Fulton-Deugo, her husband George, and their young family returned to the farm. They shifted the business to focus exclusively on maple production, continuing Leonard’s legacy.

2000

Welcoming the Sixth Generation

The sixth generation of the Fulton's grew up on the farm: nine grandchildren who became the best taste testers and quality control officers.

2002

Hazel’s Sweet Ritual

Hazel spent her final years in a nearby retirement home, where she dipped bread in her favourite light (now Amber) maple syrup every night before bed. She passed away peacefully in October 2002, leaving behind fond memories and treasured family photos.

2007

A New Era

George Deugo passed away, which is when Scott took over his dad’s role as the maple syrup producer and management of the farm.

2010

Maple Luscious

We wanted to combine the sweet smell of maple syrup boiling in the sugar camp with natural body care products. The result was Maple Luscious, a body care line, made in-house, with a kiss of maple.

2013

A Blended Family

Shirley married Al Potvin, who brought business expertise, innovative ideas, and three grown children with him. Al quickly became a key part of the Fulton's story.

2016

Triple Trouble Returns

Budding entrepreneurs Parker, Tyson, and Logan (Scott’s sons) followed in their father’s footsteps, reviving the Triple Trouble brand with youthful energy and maple passion.

2019

50 Flippin' Years

We had such fun celebrating 50 years of the Pancake House Restaurant with staff-alumni and generations of regular customers. Little did we know it would be the last year of the restaurant at Fulton's.

2020

Stepping Up

The sixth generation started to work side by side with Scott at the big evaporator, helping with tapping, production, bottling, labelling, and caring for both the camp and sugar bush.

2020-2021

Shutdown

A global pandemic forced us to close the restaurant for two years and create an online store with curbside pickup.

2022

Reimagining Fulton's

With the restaurant permanently closed, we repurposed the building to create a beautiful, expanded gift shop! Our kitchen was now bubbling with the creation of 12 (and counting!) new gourmet maple delights!

2023

A Difficult Goodbye

The family lost Al to Parkinson’s Disease on November 19, 2023. His love for family, staff, and Fulton’s is remembered every day.

2025

Carrying the Vision Forward

Today, Shirley (4th generation) and her son Scott (5th generation) lead Fulton’s, with the 6th generation already learning the art of syrup-making and the value of tradition.
